What is bulk SMS?

Bulk SMS is one text message sent to many mobile numbers at once from a business rather than from a person's handset. The business writes the message once, uploads a list of numbers, and the messages are delivered to every number on the list.

Can customers reply to my messages?

No. TISA Business Messaging is a one way channel. The message arrives from your business name rather than from a phone number, and there is no number behind a sender ID for anyone to reply to. Any route back has to be written into the message itself.

How does a Sender ID work?

An alphanumeric sender ID is the name a text message arrives from instead of a number. It is up to 11 characters long and can use letters and numbers, so a recipient sees your business name on the message before they open it.

Do I need consent to send marketing SMS?

Yes, in almost every case. Under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, marketing by text to an individual needs that person's prior consent, unless they are an existing customer whose details you took during a sale and the soft opt-in conditions are met. The business sending the message is the data controller for it, and that duty does not pass to the network carrying it.

How long can an SMS message be?

A single SMS carries up to 160 characters of standard GSM text. A longer message is not rejected: it is sent as more than one message and joined back together on the handset. Accented and non-Latin characters reduce the limit to 70 characters.

Can I send SMS through an API?

Yes. Every TISA Business Messaging account includes API access, so messages can be sent from your own systems as well as from the sending platform.
